On 20 August 2026, an attacker exploited a bug in the authorization logic of the BounceBit layer-1 blockchain, transferring around 286.5 million BB tokens, then worth approximately $3 million, from nine wallets. BounceBit halted the blockchain shortly after the attack, and within days announced that the chain would be permanently shut down, with the project migrating to Binance's BNB Chain.

The mechanism was an authorization flaw in BounceBit's transaction-spending logic. The attacker was able to convince the chain's wallet-handling code that they had authority to move balances from nine specific wallets, and the chain accepted those transfers as legitimate. The exact permission model and the function path used are not described in the public postmortem, but the pattern is consistent with a missing or improperly-checked authorization check on the transfer path. BounceBit halted the chain the same day to prevent further drains.

The figure is straightforward. The web3isgoinggreat account put the loss at $3 million, calculated from the 286.5 million BB tokens at the price at the time. The BounceBit team's X statement used the same number. No outlet reported a different figure.

The response was unusual: BounceBit announced not a patch, but a shutdown. The team said that "Maintaining a standalone Layer 1 is no longer the most effective way to serve our users", and explained that the underlying flaw was difficult to fix because BounceBit was based on Evmos, an Ethereum-VM blockchain implementation that itself had been shut down in May. Without an upstream codebase to pull fixes from, BounceBit chose to migrate rather than rebuild. Tokens will be reissued on BNB Chain. BounceBit, a bitcoin restaking protocol, had raised $6 million in seed funding in 2024 from Blockchain Capital, Breyer Capital, Bankless Ventures, OKX Ventures, HTX Ventures, and others. Its full TVL at the time of attack is not stated in the public reporting.

Compared with the other 2026 protocol shutdowns in the corpus, BounceBit is the third. The Step App "move-to-earn" project announced its shutdown on 5 August. The Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) announced its shutdown on 3 August. The BounceBit case is different from those because it is a forced shutdown in response to an active exploit rather than a planned wind-down of a fading product. The three together suggest a small wave of project terminations in mid-2026, but only the BounceBit case involves a security incident.
