On 21 July 2026, Balance Coin, a small algorithmic stablecoin built on BNB Chain, lost its dollar peg and fell to fractions of a cent after an attacker exploited a flaw in its pricing logic. The attacker was able to trick the system into accepting an incorrectly low bitcoin price, then used that artificial valuation to drain multiple vaults used by the project's lending protocol. The attacker ultimately profited by about $912,000, taken from 42DAO, the entity that runs the Balance protocol.
The mechanism was an oracle or price-feeding failure. The Balance lending protocol uses an internal price for its collateral, and the attacker was able to push that internal price downward to a manipulated level. Once the protocol accepted the low price for bitcoin collateral, the attacker borrowed against the over-valued positions or withdrew on undervalued collateral. CoinDesk framed it as a price-oracle exploit that drained the protocol's bitcoin vaults. The detail that the manipulated direction was "low" rather than "high" is unusual: most oracle manipulation exploits push prices higher to over-value collateral and borrow against it, which is what Moonwell, Cronos/Tectonic, and the Pendle/Morpho events did. Balance Coin's exploit went the other direction.
The figure is consistent across sources. The web3isgoinggreat account put the attacker's profit at about $912,000. CoinDesk put the loss at "around $1 million". Cryptopotato reported "$915K". The Defiant reported the same range. The collapse of the BLC stablecoin to fractions of a cent, reported as 99% by CoinDesk, was the larger event for users of the token rather than for the protocol itself.
The response was not publicly documented. No specific recovery was disclosed in the reviewed reporting. The 42DAO team did not announce a recovery plan or a return of funds, and the stablecoin did not recover its peg. The token remained near worthless.
Compared with the other 2026 stablecoin-related incidents in the corpus, the Balance Coin exploit is one of a small cluster of small-cap algorithmic stablecoin failures. The main comparable events from earlier years — the Terra/Luna collapse in May 2022, the Beanstalk governance attack in April 2022 — share the pattern of price manipulation or governance attack against a stablecoin whose peg depended on its own market dynamics. The 2026 events are smaller on dollar terms. Within the corpus, the Balance Coin case is the only July 2026 algorithmic-stablecoin incident.
