BNB is in the news because BNB Chain has moved past tuning its existing chain and started designing the next one. On 22 October the project published updated technical documentation for NewL1, an EVM-compatible layer-1 network meant to sit alongside BNB Smart Chain, and on 25 October Binance founder Changpeng Zhao answered the question holders care about in four words: "Multiple chains, one coins." The same week, BNB Standard, the Nasdaq-listed company that says it runs the largest corporate BNB treasury, rang the Nasdaq opening bell on 26 October and said it will operate its own validator on the chain (the company's announcement, CryptoBriefing).

The Blockworks report on the third quarter put BNB Chain first among the networks it tracks for tokenised equity trading volume, outstanding supply and holder count (crypto.news on the report), and network revenue rose 54% to $54.2 million (CryptoBriefing on the report).

A second chain, one token

The documentation describes NewL1 as the next generation chain in the BNB Chain family, built for workloads needing sub-second finality and predictable inclusion: high-frequency trading, real-time payments, confidential finance and agent-driven activity (the project documentation). The published parameters are a 200 millisecond block interval, a pre-confirmation of about 20 milliseconds through sub-blocks, and sub-second finality from an enhanced Parlia consensus using cross-block BLS votes (CryptoBriefing). Throughput is targeted above 100,000 transactions per second via parallel execution, and a Multi-Lane design reserves gas capacity per transaction class so latency-sensitive traffic is not crowded out (Blockonomi).

What is missing matters as much as what is there. No new token is issued. BNB is the native asset, bridged from BNB Smart Chain over a native bridge that is still in development, and it pays for gas on the new chain. Staking BNB mints govBNB at a ratio of one to one, a non-transferable voting ledger carrying governance weight once delegated, and protocol parameters including Multi-Lane quotas are set through that governance (the project documentation). The chain is not public yet: the documentation says NewL1 runs as a multi-validator devnet, with the public testnet and mainnet ahead (the project documentation). The testnet is planned for the end of 2026 and mainnet for early 2027 (Incrypted). BNB Chain opened a community forum category for NewL1 in July and promoted it again on 17 and 19 October (CryptoBriefing).

What the third quarter showed

Blockworks' third quarter 2026 token holder report shows what the chain did while the new design was being written. BNB Chain handled 1.51 billion transactions, about 16.4 million a day and 7.5% more than the second quarter. Trading in tokenised equities and real-world assets reached about $25.6 billion against $2.4 billion in the second quarter, and BNB Chain took over half of the tokenised asset volume Blockworks tracks (CryptoBriefing). Tokenised equity supply reached $1.13 billion and about 1.8 million addresses held it (crypto.news). Network revenue rose 54% quarter on quarter to $54.2 million and lending deposits rose 42% to $3.57 billion, while daily active addresses fell 14% to 2.10 million (CryptoBriefing, crypto.news). Separate figures put BNB Chain's tokenised stock and exchange traded fund holdings at about $1.5 billion by mid-October, roughly 37.5% to 42.59% of a market that reached about $4 billion (CryptoBriefing).

A listed company that wants to run a validator

BNB Standard is the corporate side of the same story. It was known as CEA Industries and changed its name on 29 September after an open advisory vote on X: 5,799 votes across four shortlisted names, and BNB Standard took about 47% (the announcement). Alex Odagiu became chief executive on 19 October and rang the Nasdaq opening bell at 9:30 a.m. ET on 26 October, with the broadcast from 9:15, marking the new name and the leadership change (the company's announcement). It held 515,544 BNB at 31 July, about $302.3 million, 93.1% of its total assets, and says it will run a BNB Chain validator with governance kept in house and technical operations handed to a specialist provider (CryptoBriefing).

What to watch

  • The Jenner hard fork on the BSC testnet. BNB Chain's upgrade guide of 22 October schedules Jenner for the testnet on 28 October and says mainnet timing comes separately, while the v1.8.1 client release sets Chapel testnet activation for 29 October at 02:30 UTC. That is the evening of 28 October in US time (22:30 in New York), which is consistent with the guide's date. Operators are told to check their release instructions for the exact activation time (the upgrade guide).
  • The public testnet for NewL1, planned for the end of 2026, and mainnet for early 2027 (Incrypted).
  • The rollout of BNB Standard's validator, for which no launch timeline has been announced (CryptoBriefing).
